The dos and don’ts of garbage disposals

Disposals are simple machines with a narrow tolerance for misuse. Almost every fault we see traces back to one of these.

Do

  • Run cold water before, during and for twenty seconds after grinding
  • Feed scraps in gradually rather than all at once
  • Grind a tray of ice monthly to clear build-up
  • Use citrus peel for smell instead of bleach
  • Keep the splash guard in place; it is there to stop cutlery going in

Do not

  • Pour grease down it. This causes more slow-drain complaints than everything else combined
  • Feed it fibrous skins: celery, artichoke, corn husks, onion skins
  • Put bones or fruit stones in. They do not grind, they chip the impellers
  • Use chemical drain cleaner. It attacks the seals and corrodes the housing
  • Put coffee grounds down. They pack into a sludge that behaves like wet cement

If it jams

Switch it off at the wall first. Use the hex key in the base to free the plate, clear whatever caused it, then press the reset button underneath. If it hums again straight away, stop and call us rather than repeating the cycle.
